We are so busy managing a hectic schedule that self-care often becomes the last item on our to-do list. Between work, commitments, hobbies and just life in general, it can feel near impossible to find time for yourself. But ayurveda offers a simple, yet powerful, practice to help you do this. It’s called dinacharya and means having a balanced daily routine.
Ayurveda teaches us that wellness comes from nurturing balance between body, mind and spirit. The key to feeling energised and balanced – even on the busiest days – is to create a consistent routine that aligns with your natural rhythms and dosha.

The importance of dinacharya in ayurveda
Dinacharya refers to daily practices that align your actions with nature’s cycles. From the time you wake up, to when you eat and sleep, ayurveda encourages routines that support your body’s innate energy flow. When routines are irregular, your doshas can become unbalanced, which can lead to stress, fatigue and digestive issues.

Having a consistent daily routine helps maintain harmony in your doshas,
keeping your energy steady and your mind clear.
A lack of routine affects your health and energy
Skipping meals, staying up late and lacking routine actually disrupt your body’s internal clock. Ayurveda says this disturbs your doshas:
Vata (governs movement) is disturbed by irregular sleep, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and mental fog.
Pitta (governs transformation) is disturbed by having too much on the to-do list, which can cause burnout.
Kapha (governs structure) is disturbed by a lack of movement or too much downtime, which can lead to fatigue and weight gain.
Having a balanced dinacharya prevents these disturbances and promotes stable energy and better health.
What a simple ayurvedic daily routine looks like
Even with a packed schedule, you can integrate ayurvedic practices for more energy and balance. Here’s a simple routine to support your wellbeing:
Morning: Start off on the right foot
Wake up early (ideally before 6 am): Ayurveda recommends waking up early morning to align your body’s rhythm with nature.
Water: Enjoy a glass of warm water – you can add some lemon to it to stimulate your digestive system.
Gentle stretching or yoga: 5–10 minutes of movement to awaken your body and calm your mind.
Mindful breakfast: Eat a nourishing breakfast – oatmeal is ideal – to stabilise your energy.
Midday: Recharge
Nourish: Try to eat a good lunch of seasonal foods to support your digestive fire (agni), which is greatest around noon.
Take a short walk: A walk after lunch aids digestion and clears your mind.
Reset: Take three deep breaths before and after eating to reset in between work duties and school runs.
Evening: Restful sleep
Dinner: Eat dinner by 7 pm to avoid overloading your digestive system before sleep.
Wind down: Avoid screens for at least 30 mins before bedtime. Enjoy a book, practise gratitude or massage a soothing oil into your feet to signal your body to relax.
Sleep tight: Try to sleep by 10 pm as a consistent bedtime supports deep, restorative sleep.
